A dash of professionalism & a pinch of personality

Were The Beach Boys the harbingers of Emo? Their song God Only Knows is a depressing song about a man who has no idea what he would do without his special lady friend in his life. In fact, at one point it sounds like the subject of this prematurely emo ballad is about to end it all.

If you should ever leave me
Well life would still go on believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would living do me

The world becoming a dark and scary place without some lady in his life… check
Thinking life is over because she’s gone… check

All the elements are here to suggest that The Beach Boys were one of (if note the) first emo bands around and we have them to thank for today’s emo kids.
